As the capital city of the Beehive State, Salt Lake City is a bustling and thriving community filled to the brim with things to do. While most of the action spikes during the winter, you can still have fun and adventure in Salt Lake City all year round. Here are our favorite SLC picks that are not to be missed!

For the history buff

Salt Lake City has one of the richest histories in the nation. Get to know more about it from its focal point: the Historic Temple Square. Locals consider this an icon of Salt Lake City as it is the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter-Day Saints.

Many seasonal activities take place at the Historic Temple Square, including free concerts and seasonal events. During Thanksgiving season up until New Year’s, holiday lights adorn the whole square, casting a festive glow that brings visitors and residents together. If you’re lucky, you might also catch the Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearsing on Thursday evenings.

Another site to see is “This is the Place Heritage Park“. This state park offers history enthusiasts a glimpse of what life was like during Utah’s early years. You can walk around and into carefully recreated buildings from the period such as farmhouses and shops. You can also interact with blacksmiths and woodworkers about their craft.

Take the scenic route

Talk to anyone living in Salt Lake City and they’ll tell you that one of their favorite things to do is going on scenic drives in and around the city no matter the season.

Big Cottonwood Canyon is one of the best scenic drives near Salt Lake City. A roundtrip drive should take about an hour to cover 15 miles of alpine scenery. You’ll pass by a few picnic areas as well as trailheads if you want to squeeze in a hike.

Mirror Lake is also not to be missed. Starting from Salt Lake City, this scenic drive will take you all the way up the Uinta Mountains with the highest point at 10,715 feet. Other attractions along the 42-mile drive include Bald Mountain Pass, Provo River Falls, and Bear River ranger station. Bring a picnic blanket, your fishing gear, and dress for the outdoors.
